It’s your first swimming lesson. Maybe you’re excited. Maybe you’re nervous. Maybe both! However you or your little one is feeling about it, there are things you can do to help prepare and get swimming lessons off to a flying start!

It’s your first swimming lesson. Maybe you’re excited. Maybe you’re nervous. Maybe both! However you or your little one is feeling about it, there are things you can do to help prepare and get swimming lessons off to a flying start!

We’ve compiled this handy checklist to help you help your little swimmer get prepared to dive straight in;

Encourage positivity and patience – Starting swimming lessons can be challenging for beginners, so celebrate the small wins and stay patient. Remind your child that learning takes time and progress will come with practice. Keep the focus on having fun!

Create a fun pre-lesson routine – Turn getting ready for swimming into something your child looks forward to! Maybe a fun playlist in the car or a special snack for after the lesson. These little rituals can help make the whole experience more exciting.

Packing for the pool

Help your child feel comfortable by packing all the swimming lesson essentials;

  • Goggles; to protect your child’s eyes and boost their confidence
  • Towel; a practical pack to dry off and stay warm and/or covered up on poolside, but the bright colours and character options available here can add to the swimming lesson experience for children
  • Swimming cap; non-essential but may help some feel more comfortable being in the water or even just feel more like you look the part!
  • Drink and snack; as with any exercise, it’s important to stay hydrated and replenished so consider bringing a bottle of water or squash along with a healthy snack for after the lesson
  • Floats and swimming aids/toys; if required for the lesson these should be provided by the instructor so are not essential but some may be able to incorporate a particular favourite into the lesson to add to the fun!

When signing up for swimming lessons with Swimtime we help make this that bit easier with our incredible Welcome Pack, available to pay monthly customers!

But what should you expect when you arrive poolside?

Your instructor will be there ready to greet you, introduce themselves and answer any questions you may have.

Your instructor will take this session to work with you or your child to assess the confidence and ability level which will help them plan how to best support the learning journey going forward.

You can expect plenty of encouragement, patience and support whilst in the pool to establish a solid foundation from which to build and progress in swimming lessons.
